About Adolescent Medicine

Adolescent medicine is a recognized subspecialty of pediatrics, internal medicine, and family practice. To become certified as a subspecialist, doctors take several more years of advanced training and pass a corresponding examination. The American Board of Pediatrics has certified Dr. Johnson in both the specialty of pediatrics and in the adolescent medicine subspecialty.

Some doctors have a particular interest in taking care of adolescents, but only about 400 nationally -- and a few in Orange County -- are actually board certified in Adolescent Medicine. The American Board of Medical Specialties website lets you check to see if a "specialist" in adolescent medicine is actually board certified.
